Editor’s Note: Our March 2026 mini-series on the BCC Grace and Truth blog is a reflection on the 2025 Global Biblical Counseling Summit held in December 2025 at Mount Hermon Camp in California. Brothers and sisters from 14 different nations fellowshipped together, hearing from speakers located all over the world, including Kyle Johnston, Steve Midgley, Sacha Mendes, and Kim Kira, who are all featured in this month’s mini-series.

In December of 2025, I had the blessing of sharing about biblical counseling in Japan at the Biblical Counseling Coalition Global Summit. What follows are just a few reasons for the need to see biblical counseling spread in Japan.

The subways in Japan are truly a unique cultural experience. Maybe most noticeably, they are extremely clean—contrary to every other subway system I have been on. They are very efficient, people are usually very polite, and often the subways are very quiet. It’s everything you would want in a subway system.

But on more than one occasion, I have been at a station surrounded by thousands of people (politely) hustling to their destination, and the thought will cross my mind, “There is a good chance no one here has heard the gospel of Jesus.” I got into this habit of pausing to consider that sad reality after a missionary took us to the top of a tall building in Nagoya. It was a stunning view. As far as the eye could see in every direction, there were more and more buildings. But then he said something sobering, “Almost all the people here have never heard the gospel.”

Japan is considered the second-largest unreached people group in the world by the Joshua Project, which estimates that only 0.4% are evangelical Christians. [1]Sadly, that actually represents some progress. Growing up in a Japanese American church, the number that we often heard was less than 0.1% of Japanese were Christians. Despite faithful churches and faithful mission efforts in Japan, that is incredibly slow growth over the course of the last few decades.

Biblical Counseling and Japan

Where does biblical counseling fit into all of this? In 2014, after a visit to Japan and a discussion with Brett Rayl (cbijapan.org/en), John Piper wrote an article on how he thought biblical counseling was the way to reach Japan for Christ. [2]I do agree that God might use this as a means to spread the gospel for a few reasons:

1. Japan needs healthy churches to carry out the Great Commission: There is so much work to be done in Japan, and yet there are not many churches (and most tend to be small). Though many of those churches might be preaching a true gospel and living out their faith with love, we have also seen too many unhealthy churches. Recently, in one of the biblical counseling classes we taught at Christ Bible Seminary in Nagoya, we were surprised by how many of the students had experienced some very unhealthy and even outright sinful cultures within their churches. This is in part because some of the negative aspects of the Japanese culture have seeped into the church culture (for example, unhealthy hierarchy and shame-based practices). But more pressing is that the church in Japan struggles with what every church in the world struggles with—sin—and yet has few biblical counseling resources that might offer the help and hope they need. Biblical counseling truths can foster healthy cultures and healthy members. Those healthy members can, in turn, be more ready to carry out the Great Commission mandate in their cities.
2. Japan needs leaders who persevere: Ministry in Japan can take its toll on pastors, missionaries, and ministry leaders. Aside from the normal challenges most churches face, it is often coupled with slow growth and limited visible fruit. In a country with limited ministry resources, every leader is precious, and yet many don’t have a place to receive the biblical help they need. Our counseling ministry has had the blessing of counseling pastors and missionaries from Japan, and we have been encouraged to see God’s grace, through His Word, move them toward health and joy, and yet there is so much work to be done. Biblical counseling can play a pivotal role in the longevity of the pastors, missionaries, and ministry leaders who are faithfully seeking the spread of the gospel.
3. Japan has great counseling needs: It is well-known that Japan has an extremely high suicide rate (among other counseling issues). With all its beauty, morality, and prosperity, there is still an undercurrent of hopelessness for many in their society. While we can’t counsel unbelievers, biblical counseling truths can provide opportunities to explain where the gospel intersects with their lives. For example, one time I was teaching a class in Japan on stress in the workplace. Someone invited their unbelieving friend and heard me teach on how sinful stress is a result of our idols being threatened. During one of the breaks, the unbeliever approached me and said (through translation), “I am not a Christian, but I want to know what my idols are.” It was a precious opportunity to share the gospel.

I am so thankful for the many faithful believers who are so humbly and lovingly doing the work of ministry in Japan, but in a country of over 120 million people, there is much work to be done.

일본의 지하철은 참으로 독특한 문화적 경험입니다. 아마 가장 눈에 띄는 점은 지하철이 매우 깨끗하다는 것입니다. 제가 타본 다른 어느 지하철 시스템과도 대조적입니다. 또한 매우 효율적이고, 사람들은 대체로 예의 바르며, 지하철 안은 종종 매우 조용합니다. 지하철 시스템에서 바랄 수 있는 모든 것을 갖추고 있습니다.

하지만 저는 여러 차례, 역에서 수천 명의 사람들이 각자의 목적지를 향해 예의 바르게 바삐 움직이는 모습을 보면서 이런 생각을 한 적이 있습니다.
“여기 있는 사람들 중 예수님의 복음을 들어본 사람이 아무도 없을 가능성이 높다.”

제가 이런 슬픈 현실을 잠시 멈춰 생각하는 습관을 갖게 된 것은, 한 선교사님이 우리를 나고야의 높은 건물 꼭대기로 데려가 주신 이후였습니다. 그곳에서 본 전망은 정말 장관이었습니다. 눈이 닿는 모든 방향으로 건물들이 끝없이 이어져 있었습니다. 그런데 그 선교사님은 매우 엄숙한 말을 했습니다.

“여기 있는 거의 모든 사람들은 복음을 들어본 적이 없습니다.”

일본은 조슈아 프로젝트에 따르면 세계에서 두 번째로 큰 미전도 종족 집단으로 여겨지며, 복음주의 기독교인은 약 0.4%로 추정됩니다. [1] 슬프게도, 이 수치조차 어느 정도의 진전을 나타냅니다. 제가 일본계 미국인 교회에서 자랄 때 자주 들었던 수치는 일본인 기독교인이 0.1% 미만이라는 것이었습니다. 일본 안에 신실한 교회들과 신실한 선교 사역들이 있음에도, 지난 수십 년 동안의 성장은 믿기 어려울 정도로 매우 더뎠습니다.

성경적 상담과 일본

그렇다면 이 모든 상황 속에서 성경적 상담은 어디에 자리할 수 있을까요? 2014년, 일본을 방문하고 브렛 레일과 대화를 나눈 후, 존 파이퍼는 성경적 상담이 일본을 그리스도께로 인도하는 길이 될 수 있다고 생각한다는 글을 썼습니다. [2] 저 역시 하나님께서 성경적 상담을 복음 확산의 수단으로 사용하실 수 있다고 생각합니다. 그 이유는 몇 가지가 있습니다.

첫째, 일본에는 지상명령을 수행할 건강한 교회들이 필요합니다.
일본에는 해야 할 사역이 매우 많지만, 교회의 수는 많지 않습니다. 그리고 대부분의 교회는 작은 편입니다. 물론 그 교회들 가운데 많은 교회가 참된 복음을 전하고 사랑으로 믿음을 실천하고 있을 수 있습니다. 그러나 동시에 우리는 너무나 많은 건강하지 못한 교회들도 보아 왔습니다.

최근 나고야의 그리스도 성경신학교에서 성경적 상담 수업을 가르쳤을 때, 우리는 많은 학생들이 자신들의 교회 안에서 매우 건강하지 못하고 심지어 명백히 죄악 된 문화들을 경험했다는 사실에 놀랐습니다. 이것은 부분적으로 일본 문화의 부정적인 측면들이 교회 문화 안으로 스며들었기 때문입니다. 예를 들어 건강하지 못한 위계질서나 수치심을 기반으로 한 실천들이 그렇습니다.

하지만 더 근본적인 문제는 일본 교회도 전 세계 모든 교회가 씨름하는 문제, 곧 죄와 씨름하고 있다는 것입니다. 그런데 일본 교회에는 그들이 필요로 하는 도움과 소망을 제공해 줄 성경적 상담 자료가 거의 없습니다. 성경적 상담의 진리들은 건강한 문화와 건강한 성도들을 세워갈 수 있습니다. 그리고 그러한 건강한 성도들은 자신들이 사는 도시에서 지상명령을 수행할 준비가 더 잘 될 수 있습니다.

둘째, 일본에는 인내하며 사역을 지속할 지도자들이 필요합니다.
일본에서의 사역은 목회자, 선교사, 사역 지도자들에게 큰 부담이 될 수 있습니다. 대부분의 교회가 겪는 일반적인 어려움에 더해, 일본 사역은 느린 성장과 제한적인 가시적 열매라는 어려움을 동반하는 경우가 많습니다. 사역 자원이 제한된 나라에서 모든 지도자는 귀중합니다. 그러나 많은 지도자들이 자신들에게 필요한 성경적 도움을 받을 수 있는 자리를 갖고 있지 못합니다.

우리 상담 사역은 일본의 목회자들과 선교사들을 상담하는 복을 누려 왔습니다. 우리는 하나님의 말씀이 주는 은혜를 통해 그들이 건강과 기쁨을 향해 나아가는 모습을 보며 격려를 받았습니다. 그러나 아직 해야 할 일이 너무나 많습니다. 성경적 상담은 복음의 확산을 신실하게 추구하는 목회자, 선교사, 사역 지도자들이 오래 사역을 지속하도록 돕는 데 핵심적인 역할을 할 수 있습니다.

셋째, 일본에는 큰 상담적 필요가 있습니다.
일본이 매우 높은 자살률을 보인다는 것은 잘 알려져 있습니다. 그 외에도 여러 상담적 문제들이 존재합니다. 일본은 아름다움, 도덕성, 번영을 지닌 나라입니다. 그러나 그 사회의 많은 사람들 안에는 여전히 절망의 깊은 흐름이 존재합니다.

물론 우리는 믿지 않는 사람들을 성경적 의미에서 상담할 수는 없습니다. 그러나 성경적 상담의 진리들은 복음이 그들의 삶과 어떻게 만나는지를 설명할 기회를 제공할 수 있습니다.

예를 들어, 제가 일본에서 직장 내 스트레스에 관한 수업을 가르친 적이 있었습니다. 어떤 사람이 믿지 않는 친구를 데려왔고, 그 친구는 제가 “조리된 스트레스는 우리의 우상이 위협받을 때 나타나는 결과”라고 가르치는 것을 들었습니다. 쉬는 시간 중에 그 믿지 않는 사람이 통역을 통해 제게 다가와 이렇게 말했습니다.

“저는 그리스도인은 아니지만, 제 우상이 무엇인지 알고 싶습니다.”

그것은 복음을 나눌 수 있는 참으로 귀한 기회였습니다.

저는 일본에서 너무나 겸손하고 사랑으로 사역을 감당하고 있는 많은 신실한 신자들로 인해 깊이 감사하고 있습니다. 그러나 1억 2천만 명이 넘는 인구를 가진 나라에는 아직 해야 할 일이 많습니다.
